The Archaeobotany and Wet Chemistry Labs at SNU are always happy to be contacted about questions regarding sampling strategies and analysis of archaeological science materials.
If you are preparing to excavate and want to take samples, have material already excavated that needs analysing, or want to conduct more research on an area mentioned in these pages, please contact Prof. Bates:

If any of these projects, or anything you are working on is something you are keen to do in our labs, please do get in touch after reading the following advice.
It is STRONGLY advised that when crafting an email you include a bit about yourself (your undergraduate university and degree course, your general archaeological interests), your graduate plans (what you want to work on), and also include the names of your current supervisor(s) and their email contact(s) (with their permission!). You may wish to include a CV or cover letter but this is not required.
Prof. Bates is happy to take on students for whom English is not their first language, but advises that SNU requires all students for who this is the case that they will need an internationally recognised English Language Proficiency Certificate at the point of application to SNU. All students will also need to learn Korean during their graduate degrees. It is not a requirement for starting a degree at SNU, but it is recommended that some familiarity with Korean language and/or culture is gained before interview stage.
There are many funding opportunities for graduate degrees at SNU, and more information can be found on these at the OIA (https://oia.snu.ac.kr/page/scholarships.php). Please familiarise yourself with these before contacting Prof. Bates. It must also be noted that funding certificates and acceptance certificates are NOT provided in advance of interviews, and you cannot request these until/if the university gives you a graduate position. These will only be issued once the university grants a graduate position and are issued by the OIA and not by Prof. Bates. Please do not request one from Prof. Bates, it will not be provided.
To contact Prof Bates regarding graduate study please email her at jbates01@snu.ac.kr. She will endeavor to get back to you as soon as possible, but please be patient and allow her a few days to reply.
Post-doctoral enquiries are welcomed to the same email address, though please be aware Prof. Bates does not currently hold funding to support post-docs and recommends that prospective post-doctoral researchers look into possible appropriate funding sources and mention them in the email so they can be discussed.
